Why we built Neutron#

Historically, storage systems were driven by trends in Enterprise computing. Enterprise teams favored a one-team, one-function approach. Specialized teams invested in specialist hardware for their specific problem domain. The approach was necessitated by the use of specialist hardware for storage tasks, but has remained largely the same in spite of x86 CPUs and standard server hardware being used in storage arrays for more than a decade.

We believe that storage arrays and their surrounding specialized paraphernalia are if not entirely obsolete then at least not the strategic direction for modern computing. Fiber channel links cannot even keep up with a single modern NVMe drive while Ethernet keeps accelerating into the stratosphere.

Neutron builds on these assumptions to provide a self-managing storage system capable of meeting modern demands.
